This position is accountable for using professional expertise and judgment in the accurate interpretation of physician orders and drug control, compounding, packaging, and dispensing, in accordance with legal requirements, hospital and departmental policies and prescribed medical care to ensure safe and appropriated drug therapy.
The incumbent is accountable for dispensing medications in the hospital in accordance with the physician's patient care plan, established departmental and hospital policies, and legal requirements. This includes interpreting and screening physician orders for appropriate dosage, route of administration, drug or therapeutic incompatibilities, and contradictions with subsequent resolution of any questions arising from this procedure. The incumbent must procure the medication and package, label and dispense it in a timely manner.
The Staff Pharmacist is personally responsible for functioning within the strict State of Federal laws regulating the dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances. Accurate and precise documentation must be maintained. This position is accountable for preparation of intravenous medications and total parenteral nutrition solutions, using aseptic techniques. This includes knowledge of infusion pumps and working knowledge of the computerized I.V. monitoring system.
The Staff Pharmacist is accountable for teaching, lending professional guidance and expertise to Pharmacy Interns and Pharmacy Externs. The incumbent is also responsible for providing the necessary professional guidance to the Pharmacy Technician for proper stock of shelves and checking for credit returned drugs to meet requirements of the law. The Staff Pharmacist must also guide and confirm the accuracy of the Technician's work regarding supply orders from other departments for needed medications and other stock supplies as well as Code Blue carts, Anesthesia trays, and emergency drug kits prior to any delivery
The Staff Pharmacist is responsible for maintaining cooperative lines with other hospital departments, nurses, and physicians in order to provide teaching, in-service education, and professional expertise to fulfill the overall objectives of the hospital.
The incumbent must be a Registered Pharmacist, currently licensed by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.
